In junior high school, I sat at the nerd lunch table. I was one of the nerds. We talked about the Dune novels, Lord of the Rings, and Michael Crichton a lot. One nerd was political and would talk about Tom Clancy and World War II.
One lunch period, two of the popular girls came up and talked to us. They pretended to like us and be interested in us. They were doing it as a joke for their friends.
I don’t know if any of the other nerds knew it was a joke. I knew they were making fun of us.
When one of the girls tried to sit down, I shoved the nerd next to me a little, to keep him from scooting over for her. She slipped off the bench and fell on the floor. She laughed and got back up and sat down.
I think this is the only time I’ve done violence to a woman.
They stayed for a while. Some of the nerds talked to them, but I didn’t say anything. Eventually they left. I don’t remember anyone talking about it after that.
